Rugby Advances at CRC Sevens
Chester, Pa. — Madison Hughes scored the crucial points with time expired in a 14-14 draw with Kutztown State to send the Dartmouth College men’s rugby team through to the quarterfinal round of the USA Sevens Collegiate Rugby Championship at PPL Park on Saturday.
Down 14-7 with 5 seconds left following a penalty to the Bears, Dartmouth’s John Abraham and Hughes worked a combination of passes, freeing the latter to score in the right-wing side of the try zone. Facing an extreme angle for the 2-point conversion kick, Hughes split the uprights to guarantee the Big Green’s advancement. A loss would have required Dartmouth to have a sufficient point differential to move on.
Kevin Clark scored a first-half try for Dartmouth, which also rallied from a 17-5 deficit to stop Notre Dame, 19-17, in its other game on Saturday. The Big Green started the 20-school tournament with a 21-5 defeat of St. Joseph’s.
Dartmouth is seeking its third CRC championship, having won the tournament in 2011 and 2012 before a quarterfinal elimination last year. The full schedule for the final day of play can be found at www.usasevenscrc.com.
