Baltimore — Duke won its second straight NCAA men’s lacrosse championship, holding off Notre Dame’s comeback with a goal by Kyle Keenan with 2:39 left to clinch an 11-9 victory Monday.

The top-seeded Blue Devils (17-3) limited the Irish to one goal over the first 35 minutes, built a six-goal lead in the third quarter and held on to capture their third national championship in the last five years.

It wasn’t easy. The sixth-seeded Irish (12-6) closed to 9-8 with 5 minutes left and had the ball with a chance to tie. But after Duke goalie Luke Aaron stopped a shot by Jim Marlatt, Keenan scored on the other end for a two-goal cushion.

Sergio Perkovic’s fifth goal of the game made it 10-9 with 49.6 seconds remaining. Duke won the ensuing draw, however, and Jordan Wolf scored with 23.6 seconds to go to clinch it.

Wolf finished with two goals and four assists, and the Blue Devils got goals from seven different players.

Uruguay Star Recovering From Knee Surgery

Montevideo, Uruguay — Uruguay star striker Luiz Suarez is recovering well from knee surgery, and the national team doctor refuses to rule him out for the World Cup.

Suarez, one of the world’s best players, is believed to have been injured in Liverpool’s last league game of the season. He had surgery Thursday.

While team doctor Alberto Pan says Suarez is “not feeling any pain,” he cannot give assurances that Suarez will be fit to play. Pan adds it is “premature” to say when he can return to training.

The tournament in Brazil begins June 12. Uruguay plays its World Cup opener against Costa Rica on June 14, then faces England on June 19 and Italy on June 24.

Big Indy Payday For Hunter-Reay

Indianapolis — Ryan Hunter-Reay’s narrow Indianapolis 500 win brought him a $2.49 million payday.

The overall purse was $14.23 million. The winnings were announced Monday night.

Hunter-Reay edged Helio Castroneves by 0.060 seconds Sunday in the second-closest margin of victory in the history of the race. He became the first American to win the Indy 500 since Sam Hornish Jr. in 2006.

Hunter-Reay recorded a 220.927 mph final lap to Castroneves’ 220.729 mph, preventing the Brazilian from joining A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears as a four-time winner.

Powers Wins Nationals; Phinney Hurt in Crash

Chattanooga, Tenn. — Alison Powers became the first rider in eight years to sweep the U.S. cycling championships, pulling away from the field in the final stretch Monday to win the women’s road race.

Eric Marcotte held off teammate Travis McCabe to become the surprise men’s champion. Alex Howes finished third in a race that was marked by a serious crash involving time trial champion Taylor Phinney, who was transported to a hospital with a fractured bone in his leg.

Phinney had hoped to ride in the Tour de France later this summer.

Powers, who won the time trial on Friday, is the first cyclist to win both events in the same weekend since Kristin Armstrong in 2006. Megan Guarnier finished second and Evelyn Stevens third.
