Quechee Bridge Closed Monday, and Maybe Part of Tuesday, Too
Quechee — The rebuilt Quechee Bridge could be closed until 3:30 p.m. today and may be closed tomorrow morning, as well, as workers move forward with attaching its cover.
The bridge was opened to traffic Dec. 29, but the town was surprised to find that contractors had closed it to traffic on Thursday of last week, Hartford Selectman F. X. Flinn wrote in an informational mass email.
“Oops — contractor error,” Flinn wrote. “They had told us back in the fall that once the sides of the cover were up they would be able to work without disrupting traffic. We proceeded on that assumption. Last week the contractors got, um, cold feet about that and decided to close the bridge while putting in a center beam.”
Flinn said the town “worked with the architects and contractor to reiterate that the rule was the bridge should always have at least one lane open,” allowing today and tomorrow as two exceptions. The bridge may also close in May to allow a new layer of asphalt to be applied.
Hartford Department of Public Works Utility Superintendent John Choate said the decision about whether to close the bridge tomorrow morning will depend on how far workers get in the process today.
Windsor-based contractor Miller Construction is overseeing the $2.2 million project.
A grand opening and dedication ceremony is slated for June 29.
