N.H. Legislature Makes Top Three on ‘Mother Jones’ List, but Nobody’s Bragging
File under “no surprise here”: Mother Jones magazine has listed the 2011-12 New Hampshire Legislature as one of the most ridiculous in the nation. The Granite State clocked in at No. 3.
From Mother Jones:
Comedy Central’s Ilya Gerner described the state House of Representatives as “a bunch of part-time real-estate agents throwing monkey feces at a wall.” But that’s not entirely fair to the 400 members of the English-speaking world’s third-largest democratic body — some of them are lawyers, too.
Mother Jones goes on to describe some of the Legislature’s transgressions. Most notable, in reporter Tim Murphy’s words, was “GOP state Rep. Kyle Tasker (dropping) his gun on the floor of the Capitol during a hearing of the — not making this up — public safety committee.” (Tasker was reelected in November.)
But the description omitted one of my favorite (or least favorite, really) examples of crazy: Then-House Speaker Bill O’Brien repeatedly banned reporters from our sister newspaper, the Concord Monitor, from attending press conferences in his office. The ban was in response to an editorial cartoon published in the Monitor depicting O’Brien as Adolf Hitler after a fellow Republican lawmaker muttered “Sieg Heil” on the House floor while arguing with the speaker.
The No. 1 and No. 2 slots went to Tennessee and Oklahoma, respectively.
What of Vermont, you say? The Green Mountain State didn’t break Mother Jones’ top seven “worst of the worst” online. Where do you think it belongs? Did New Hampshire get a fair shake? Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
