Letter: The Decline of Northern Stage

It is difficult to read between the lines in Alex Hanson’s report on the departure of Brooke Ciardelli from Northern Stage (“Founder Departs Theater,” Nov. 20). It appears that her productions outstripped the ability of the newly appointed and first executive director, Russell Maitland, to raise funds necessary to sustain the quality of theater Ciardelli brought to the Upper Valley. Board member Janet Miller Haines has it backwards when she says Ciardelli “was a little ahead of us.” I guess this means Northern Stage will endorse mediocrity instead of the professional theater we have come to enjoy for the last 16 years.
