Letter: Why Is a Mystery; How Is Not

To the Editor:

Eleven months after the tragic mass shooting at Newtown emerges an exhaustive report (“Motive in Newtown Remains a Mystery,” Nov. 26). Unanswered remain the two burning questions: Why Adam Lanza went on his rampage?; and, How do we prevent the next one?

We all have 20/20 hindsight and see this nightmare through our own lenses. That said, Lanza didn’t storm an elementary school and discharge 154 bullets with a video game. Moreover, mental health experts say that based on his observed behavior, what happened could not have been predicted.

We will wrestle with the report’s results and continue to wonder why. We know how he was able to kill his mother and then 26 others in the school and then himself. Until we deal rationally with the how, the next tragedy is only a matter of time. And good guys with guns can’t stop every bad guy, as the armed guard at the Washington Naval Shipyard showed.
