Letter: Kuster Needs to Calm Down

To the Editor:

In her Monday op-ed on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (“Taking the Most From Those With the Least”), U.S. Rep. Anne Kuster, D-N.H., sets a new standard for hyperbolic hysteria. She calls the GOP’s recommended $40 billion reduction in benefits over the next 10 years “reckless.” It would “gut” and “eviscerate” the program. While stating that the average monthly benefit is “only about $130,” it would nonetheless leave most of the more than 100,000 Granite State beneficiaries “going hungry and barely making ends meet,” leaving them and millions of other Americans “at risk of hunger and poverty.”

Calm down, congresswoman. SNAP has already doubled in size under President Obama, and the $40 billion cut is from an estimated $800 billion expenditure over those 10 years. That amounts to 5 percent.
