Letter: Dazzled by Water Spirits

To the Editor:

What an amazing accomplishment for Diana Nyad — at the age of 64! (“Woman First to Swim to Fla. Without Cage,” Sept. 3.) And isn’t it serendipitous and delightful that her last name sounds like “naiad,” the water nymphs of Roman mythology! According to my Webster’s New World Dictionary, naiads lived in and gave life to springs, fountains, rivers and lakes. A second definition says “naiad” is sometimes used to describe a female swimmer. According to the dictionary, it may also be pronounced “NAY-ad.
