Letter: Important Part of Suicide Discussion
To the Editor:
My heart goes out to all the families in Hartford touched by recent teen suicides. And I commend the organizers of the recent community forum for starting an important conversation on suicide awareness (“Hartford Forum Seeks to Bring Suicide Awareness Into Open,” July 2). Part of that discussion should include methods because means do matter. The attempt to take one’s life is often a cry for help, but in the case of guns, there’s rarely a chance to intervene. Sadly, Vermont leads the Northeast in the youth firearm suicide death rate. Our children would be safer if we had a safe-gun-storage law like those in 27 other states. Unsecured guns in the home are a recipe for tragedy.
