Letter: A Newcomer Says Thank You

To the Editor:

I arrived with 100 pounds of personal items on my back, as that was all I could board with as I said goodbye to Texas and headed to New England. I had a vision of hope, of starting a brand new life — and a brand new life it is! Although not the way I had envisioned, I have been in Vermont a little over seven months, and for the last five months, I have been living in homeless shelter.

This is a note of gratitude — not one of despair. If it were not for the Upper Valley Haven, I would not have met the people who have inspired me to create and launch my business. As I take my first steps as a new business owner and look to have a sustainable, dignified living, I will keep the volunteers, staff and community in my mind and heart!

This community knows how to care for its own and embrace and welcome the newcomer!
