Letter: Ayotte’s Shameful Vote

To the Editor:

The failure of the Senate to pass sensible background-check legislation is in part due to Sen. Kelly Ayotte’s shameful vote against it. While expanded background checks have the support of 89 percent of New Hampshirites, Ayotte decided to represent the interests of National Rifle Association’s Washington lobby instead. Background checks are common sense and work. For example, in states where background checks are required for handguns, far fewer women are shot to death by their intimate partners. If Ayotte feels she can vote against legislation that is evidence-based and has such widespread support, whose interests is she really representing?
