Letter: Motorists Have a Right to the Road

To the Editor:

The pedestrian problem is caused by ignorant pedestrians who think they own the street. When was the last time the police gave a jaywalking ticket to a pedestrian? They step out in front of traffic without looking (both ways, as we were taught to do as children in the ’60s. The problem isn’t drivers, it’s the pedestrians who don’t pay attention to the law against stepping out into traffic when it isn’t safe to do so. Stop blaming drivers and focus on those on foot who have a much greater ability to stop walking than a car going 25 miles per hour. The same goes for bicyclists who ride in traffic creating hazards to themselves and others. Motorists have a right to the road. They take tests and pay the state for the “privilege.” Pedestrians and cyclists should have to do the same.
