Letter: Solution to the Marriage Mess

To the Editor:

People go on and on about the separation of church and state, but there is one area in which church and state are closely bound: The church, no matter the denomination, has the power to solemnize marriage.

The solution to this whole who-can-get-married mess is to require all couples, heterosexual or homosexual, to have a civil contract — a civil union, if you will — that gives all couples the same federal and state legal rights. Anyone who wants their union sanctified can go to church for a religious ceremony. But it’s the state that should have the right to legalize such contracts, not the church. Many European countries require a civil contract to legalize a marriage. That’s the equitable solution.
