Letter: Vermont Should Be in the Vanguard
To the Editor:
When asked about meaningful gun violence protection laws for Vermont, Gov. Peter Shumlin says that “gun changes should come from the federal level in order to apply to the 50 states.” This is true, but since when has Vermont waited for the federal government to take the lead? Shumlin is not waiting for changes at the federal level to implement a one-payer health care system. Vermont did not wait for changes at the federal level to approve same sex-marriage or civil unions. In fact, as far back as 1777, Vermont did not wait for changes at the federal level to abolish slavery. A recent Castleton State College survey indicates Vermonters support legislation to reduce gun violence. So, Gov. Shumlin, I am asking you to lead in supporting and passing gun violence protection laws. It is the right thing to do!
