Letter: Same Name, Different Opinion
To the Editor:
Thank you for your recent front-page story on the Mascoma Valley Regional High School proposal and for quoting those who were interviewed while entering and exiting the polls. While one of your interviews with a gentleman who has the same first and last name as I do allowed him to share his thoughts on why he voted against the article, I would like to share some thoughts on why my wife, Kamala, and I voted for the article.
We supported the proposal for its trimmed-down approach to solving the ongoing and growing needs of our school district. While addressing the current building and curriculum issues, the proposal would also have provided space for all departments to grow. Specific departments that would have benefited from the proposed expansion were music, art, library and technology, and the alternative program — along with an auditorium that could have been used by all schools in the district.
Today’s students face greater competition for both college and job placement than the students of the past. Now is the time to support growth and resources necessary to provide the students of tomorrow a competitive advantage and proper education. Just as your front-page story and photo showed, the students of today, including my very own two children, realize the need for a change. Based on the proposed project timeline and the results of the recent vote, the high school students of today may never see a day in a newly renovated high school, yet they still stood their ground in support for the proposal.
