Letter: A No-Brainer in Bethel

To the Editor:

One of the jobs I held in New York City was as administrative assistant at an executive employment agency. My primary responsibility was to review all resumes of potential job applicants and screen those who walked in without resumes. I’m having flashbacks to those times when I think of the current race for Bethel Selectboard. For me, the choice is a no-brainer.

On the one hand, you have an individual with a lengthy and very impressive resume who has served our town and country well in many capacities. He has a degree from the University of New Hampshire in economics and political science. He operated the Guy Wilson Agency for more than 25 years. In 1979, he bought Bethel’s Guy Wilson agency. Over the years, he acquired 13 other agencies throughout the state, and merged them into more efficient enterprises.

He retired as colonel after 29 years in the Army and was selected as Army adviser to the Vermont National Guard. He is commander of Bethel Legion Post No. 66.

Besides being the senior member and serving as chair of the current Selectboard, he is a charter member and co-founder of the Bethel Business Association, serving two terms as chair. He is past president and executive director of the White River Valley Ambulance and is currently Bethel’s representative. As executive director of the Green Mountain Economic Development Corp., he played a key role in keeping a large company in town. He has been a member of the Bethel Historical Society.

Before moving to Bethel, he served as chair of the Brookfield School Board and the supervisory union board.

The other applicant has no resume to speak of. His flier lists nothing concrete, but fills half a page with empty rhetoric. Having been involved personally in various Bethel town committees, organizations and businesses for the last 32 two years, I do not ever recall seeing the other candidate. However, he claims to have “a strong interest in community organizing.”

I am supporting Neal Fox for selectman because the other candidate has not even passed my test to warrant an interview.
