Letter: Another Successful Coat Drive

Another Successful Coat Drive

To the Editor:

After our first year’s gratifying experience in organizing a coat collection, Storme Odell and I questioned trying to recreate its success. We concluded that even if we did not collect as many coats as last year, the ones we did would still be appreciated. Thank you, Storme, for all you do to help with the drive and also for making it such an enjoyable experience. This year, after deciding to get more organized, our efforts were well rewarded: We collected more than 350 “gently used” or new coats, which we then donated to Operation Santa Claus in Bradford, Vt., and to The Upper Valley Haven. I also thank One Warm Coat and its new president, Jennifer Stockard, for excellent guidance and materials for running a coat drive .

This year, we had six drop-off locations covering more of the Upper Valley and making it easier for folks to find a place to take their coats to. We thank Mary and Ed Wendell of Hill’s 5 & 10 and the Odell family of Odell Insurance Co. in Bradford; Aletta Chapman Traendly and all her family and co-workers at Chapman’s Country Store in Fairlee; Bob and Denby Coyle of Stella’s Italian Kitchen and Market in Lyme; and Sally Wright Bacon at Oodles, which recently opened in White River Junction. It was fun to see the kids at the Piermont Village School get involved, through the efforts of Principal Jonann Torsey.

My hesitation in asking people to take the time and make the effort again this year was quickly dispelled by the enthusiasm from all the people listed above to become part of this year’s event. Thank you.

Off course a big thank you also goes out to all of you, young and old, who donated the coats. Whether you helped run the drives, are involved in running Operation Santa or the Upper Valley Haven or donated a coat, I am proud to have you as a neighbor.
