Letter: For a New Type of Politics
To the Editor:
You may have noticed mention of a newly formed national citizens’ movement dedicated to promoting a new politics of pragmatic, common-sense, nonpartisan problem-solving: No Labels.
No Labels promoted the No Budget, No Pay bill that was just passed in the U.S. House.
Curious as well as skeptical, I attended the group’s Meeting to Make America Work on Jan. 14 in New York City and was very impressed by its action plan, which includes committed members of Congress such as Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt.
No Labels is calling for a new understanding of leadership to achieve cooperation. Leaders must:
∎ Tell the full truth; they need to recognize how big the problem is and agree to start with the same facts.
∎ Govern for the future, not for the next election.
∎ Put the country first instead of fighting for political advantage.
∎ Accept the responsibility they were given — to solve problems.
Importantly, the leadership of both parties needs to work together to get anything done.
Please learn more at NoLabels.org and add your voice to amplify our message to stop fighting and start fixing. We have to act together.
