Letter: Second Amendment Is Outdated
To the Editor:
In my view, the first half of the Second Amendment, “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state,” defines the second half, “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” That is, the right to bear arms is sharply qualified by the demands of a militia. Since when is a man slaughtering dozens of his own countrymen, including women and children, with an assault weapon meeting the requirements of a militia? It seems to me that this amendment has long passed any relevance or usefulness and should be removed from our Constitution.
