Letter: Please Help Sandy’s Victims
Please Help Sandy’s Victims
To the Editor:
I would like to thank all who have already offered relief to the many communities affected by the recent Hurricane Sandy. Money, goods and time have been helping to meet the needs of so many during this time of changing seasons. I write to share the information of an ongoing relief connection. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is the outreach ministry of the United Methodist Church. UMCOR mobilizes before a disaster even hits to prepare areas and coordinate resources with other organizations within the disaster range. UMCOR then participates in the three-phase disaster relief process: immediate safety needs, essential daily relief and working with communities on rebuilding. One hundred percent of all donated money and items are used within the designated disaster area.(You can learn more about UMCOR at www.umcor.org.)
A call has gone out to the United Methodist Church communities and friends to continue to support relief efforts even after the news has begun to wane and the pictures have started to disappear. There continues to be a desperate need for cleaning kits, health kits and layette kits, as well as new blankets, new toys, new coats, new batteries, new baby diapers, baby formula and baby wipes. A receiving and processing center is located at the Lake Sunapee UMC’s Three Steeples Hub. You can learn more about how you can help by contacting the Hub via email: firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 603-372-2302 or through the church website www.lakesunapeeumc.org. You can also contact your local United Methodist Church to see how it is helping out.
In this time of thanks-giving, we look at our own abundant blessings and remember with sadness how many lives have been affected by this hurricane. We will have a second trailer headed down to “mission central” with relief supplies at the end of the month. We have already sent over 200 cleaning buckets and 750 health kits to New York City. Think of a creative way you can incorporate hurricane relief donations as part of your thanksgiving celebrations.
Thank you for considering participating in this vital effort.
