Letter: Rights Demand Responsibilities
To the Editor:
The editorial on Jan. 22 stated “the death penalty makes killers of us all.”
If that is true, what does the acceptance and encouragement of the wars in the Middle East make us? Thousands were killed or permanently injured. The environment was destroyed, and millions, if not billions, of dollars were wasted.
What does accepting or ignoring the massacre of children in Newtown, Conn., make us?
Mentally unbalanced individuals possess guns. Every day, individual or multiple killings take place. Background checks are not universal, and nothing is done. Gun owners demand their rights, but where are the licensed, insured and registered gun owners? Rights demand responsibilities.
“Stand your ground” laws actively encourage homicide and are accepted or ignored. Nothing is done.
Doing nothing stains us all with blood.
