Arline Ann Downes Rich
Lebanon, N.H. — Arline Ann Downes Rich, 87, a former longtime resident of Crystal Lake in Enfield, N.H., died within two weeks of finding out that she had lung cancer at her most recent home at Harvest Hill in Lebanon on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013.
She was born in Contoocook, N.H., on May 3, 1926, a daughter of the late Daniel and Alice (Sargent) Downes. Arline graduated from Hopkinton High School in 1943 and later from the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. She then became an instructor there until 1951, at which time she became a nursing supervisor and was employed in nursing administration at MHMH for 39 years until her retirement. It was during that time that Arline became the first instructor of nursing at the Hartford High Vocational School in 1971. In 1948, she married Paul Norris Rich of West Lebanon, N.H. and together they lived in West Lebanon, White River Jct., Vt. and Wilder, Vt. before they retired to Crystal Lake in Enfield and Florida. They were married for 50 years until his death in 1998. She would later reconnect with a dear high school sweetheart, Claude “Bing” Plummer in 2010 and they spent two lovely years together until his death in 2012.
In her spare time she loved to swim and golf and was a member of the Hanover Country Club for many years.
Arline was predeceased by three sisters, Madeline Buttrick, Pauline Wilder and Katherine Martin.
She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Zoe-Ann Lyons and Scott of Dade City, Fla., Gail Rich Menkes of Simsbury, Conn., Tracey Rich Dugdale and David of West Windsor, Vt. and Bradley K. Rich and Donna of Topsfield, Mass.; seven grandchildren, Amanda, Matthew and Michelle Rich, Jack Dugdale, Sarah Menkes, Carlton Lyons and Cara McSherry; and two great-grandchildren, Anna and Scott McSherry.
Arline’s family would like to share how extremely grateful they are to the nursing staff at Harvest Hill for the care and compassion they gave to her these past few weeks.
