Bessie Louise Godfrey

Brandon, Vt. — Betty Godfrey’s spirit left her earthly body quietly on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, after a short battle with cancer.

Betty was born Bessie Louise Godfrey on Sept. 17, 1937, to Arthur and Florence (Webster) on the farm in West Fairlee. There she grew up with her three brothers and two sisters and a large extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Betty attended school in West Fairlee. Betty was never afraid of hard work which started on the farm with household chores where she obtained her love for cooking and baking. Betty will be remembered for her apple pie, donuts and fudge. She spent much time helping in the gardens, haying, sugaring and the apple orchard. Betty also had a fun and playful side to her as well. She loved attending family gatherings. Her adult livelihood was in housekeeping in the Mad River Valley and Sugarbush area.

Betty loved music, especially country music. She played guitar from her early 20’s until her illness no longer made it possible for her to do so. She attended many gatherings and made numerous taped recordings of music being played by friends and her sister Nellie.

Betty was predeceased by her parents as well as her siblings, Evelyn, Arthur Jr., Edward, Kenneth and Eleanor.

She is survived by her sister, Nellie Freeman of Waitsfield; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be held at a later date at the convenience of her family and will be posted at that time.
