George Lewis Garipay

Shalimar, Fla. — On Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, Lewis Garipay, 82, passed away at his home in Shalimar, surrounded by his family. He was born in Hanover, N.H. on July 22, 1931, to L. Earle and Helene (Bernard) Garipay. After graduating from Hanover High School in 1949, he attended the University of New Hampshire before enlisting in the Air Force in 1950. He was a Master Sergeant when he retired after 26 years of service.

During his years in the Air Force, he served several tours In Germany as well as Vietnam, Goose Bay, Labrador, and multiple bases in the United States. While in Officer Training School, a previous leg injury while in the military prevented him from completing the physical demands of the training. His last duty assignment was at Eglin AFB in Florida. As a civilian, he continued to do the same work in the same location as his military assignment had been prior to his retirement.

In 1955, he married Christine Groger in Germany. He is survived by his wife; his son, Roland C. Garipay, CDR USN (Ret) and his wife, Suriyan; grandsons, Brandon and Travis; granddaughter, Kristina; daughter, Patricia Garipay Contreras and her husband, Rick; his brothers, Charles and Daniel and their wives, Joan and Thomasine; and nieces and nephew.

A family gathering will take place in the spring when his ashes will be returned home to his native New Hampshire.
