Grace Beal

Bethel, Vt. — Grace Beal, 90, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at Menig Extended Care Facility in Randolph, Vt.

She was born Aug. 12, 1923, in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Casmir Orticari and Angelina Izzo Orticari. She was the oldest of three children, her brother Louis and her sister Irma having predeceased her along with her parents.

Grace graduated from New Britain High School in New Britain, Conn. and New Britain School of Nursing. She started her nursing career as a private duty nurse in Connecticut until joining the Navy as a Wave in 1944, where she spent her time in Boston. She continued her nursing career, after the war, in Connecticut until 1947, when she moved to Vermont and married Warren Beal who also predeceased her.

After moving to Vermont she started working at Gifford Medical Center and became a well known nurse in her starched white cap and white uniform. She was a supervisor in many capacities ending her full time career in the Operating Room as the supervisor there but later going back for part time work as one of Gifford’s Golden Girls.

She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Bethel and the Catholic Daughters Court St. Anthony. She had been an avid bowler and golfer and was a past member of Montague Golf Club. In recent years she enjoyed her weekly outings to the Royalton Senior Center and the Golden Girl Lunches.

She is survived by her daughter, Paula Beal, of Bethel, and her partner, William LaFontaine; grandsons, Michael Mills and his wife Julie, Chad Mills and his wife Robyn; and granddaughter Katie Mills. Also four great-grandchildren, McKayla and Meredith Mills, and Hannah Grace White and Braden White, who were the love of her life; as well as nieces and nephews.

A memorial mass will be celebrated Thursday, August 29th, 11 a.m., at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Bethel. Burial, with military honors, will follow at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Randolph Center. There are no calling hours.
