E. Thor Carlson

Newport, N.H. — E. Thor Carlson, artist and teacher, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, at the age of 87, in Newport.

He is survived by his wife, Laura and his son, Hans.

Born on Sept. 18, 1925, in Gardener, Mass., he served in the US Navy, in the south Pacific, during WWII. After the war, he attended the Yale art school and, in 1949, was one of the first Fulbright scholars to travel to Europe. There he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, Italy. His career as a professional artist and teacher began soon after, spanning six decades, and he touched many people’s lives with his work and his ideas.

It was his wish that there be no funeral or memorial service, and that any memorials be made to the art programs at the Worcester Art Museum, where he had his first lessons as a boy.
