Charles E. “Charlie” Boothroyd

Chelsea, Vt. — Charles E. “Charlie” Boothroyd, 84, died on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at the Brookside Nursing home in White River Jct., Vt., with his wife, Grace and their two daughters, Linda and Carolyn by his side.

He was born March 5, 1929, in Hartford, Conn., the son of Charles Edward and Dorothy (Pihl) Boothroyd. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948, serving aboard the U.S.S. Stribling DD-867. On July 29, 1950, he married Grace Dimmock of Tolland, Conn. They lived in Tolland for over 45 years before moving to Chelsea in 1999. Charlie worked over 30 years for Gottier Fuel Company of Rockville, Conn., as a heating technician before retiring in 1991.

He was a member of the Tolland Congregational Church of Tolland; the United Church of Chelsea in Chelsea, Vt., and the Tin Can Sailors of Fall River, Mass. He was actively involved in the restoration and maintenance of the destroyer, U.S.S. Kennedy. He also worked in the ship’s museum from 1980 to 2000 and was part of a small crew on board the Kennedy when it was used in the Kevin Costner movie, “Thirteen Days.”

He enjoyed duckpin bowling, traveling, camping, snowmobiling, skiing, swimming and being with his family. In recent years, his passion was playing bluegrass music with his banjo. He always welcomed everyone to his home and was adored by those who met him. He made many sacrifices so his family could be well provided for and was a loving and devoted husband. He was a wonderful father, giving his daughters a lifetime of memories.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Grace Boothroyd of Chelsea; two daughters, Linda Lazaroff and her husband, Bob of Tunbridge, Vt. and Carolyn Boothroyd of Pittsford, Vt.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; a son-in-law, Andy Barter, Sr.; a sister, Lillian Lord and a brother, Albert Boothroyd.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home, 300 Vt. Rte. 110, Chelsea. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel in Randolph Center, Vt. with Rev. Deadra Ashton officiating. The burial will be held with full military honors following the service.
