Rita A. Harding
Hartland, Vt. — Rita A. Harding, 91, passed away Tuesday morning, July 30, 2013, at the home of her daughter, Rowena Harding in Hartland.
She was born Jan. 5, 1922, in Abington, Mass. the daughter of Victor and Aurora (Jacob) Bureau. She received her schooling in Whitman, Mass. and graduated from Whitman High School in 1940. She married Thomas M. Harding in Whitman on January 16, 1944. She was employed at Regal Shoe in Whitman for several years before starting her family. Since 1946, Mr. and Mrs. Harding spent summer months at their Barron Hill family farm in Hartland. They spent winter months in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. beginning in 1967. They retired to Ft. Lauderdale and Hartland in 1974.
Mrs. Harding enjoyed bowling and was a member of the bowling league in Whitman, Mass. She was also a member of the Hartland Grange. She loved sewing, knitting and was an accomplished seamstress, making clothing, including dresses and wedding gowns for her daughters. She was fond of berry picking and canning jams and jellies. She enjoyed making apple pies and had received first place at the New England Expo Pie Contest in Springfield, Mass. She enjoyed playing bingo, playing cards, traveling with her husband and family, and spending several summer months in Maine. She was fond of riding carousels at fairs. She was an avid sports fan and a very “lucky” gambler. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She had a strong Catholic faith and was a member of Our Lady of the Snows Church in Woodstock.
Her husband of 57 years passed away in 2001. She was also predeceased by one son-in-law, Robert Keenan in 2012 and by one sister, Julia Pimental.
Survivors include, four daughters, Joan V. Keenan of Hartland, Julie M. Davis and her husband, Neil of Sedgwick, Maine, Louise A. Harding and her husband, Charles Ayala of Santa Barbara, Calif. and Rowena M. Harding of Hartland; one son, Peter M. Harding and his companion, Sybil Smith, of Norwich, Vt.; one sister, Edna Godfrey of Centerville, Mass.; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Friday evening, Aug. 2, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 3 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Snow Catholic Church in Woodstock. The Rev. Thomas Mosher, Pastor, will be the Celebrant. Committal services will follow in the Hartland Village Cemetery. A reception for family and friends will follow at the home of her daughter, Rowena M. Harding on Advent Hill Road in Hartland.
