Dr. Dick Hoefnagel

Hanover Center, N.H. — Dr. Dick Hoefnagel, 90, Professor Emeritus of Maternal and Child Health at Dartmouth Medical School, and of Hanover Center, N.H., died on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Madioen, Indonesia, on September 25, 1922. He was the son of Jacobus Andries Hoefnagel and Roelina Kreule of the Netherlands. Dick received his MD from the University of Amsterdam Medical School in 1950.

He leaves his wife of 57 years, the former Margaret Hunter, of Chestnut Hill, Mass. Survivors include his two children, Erica R. de la Uz and husband, Javier, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Hans K. Hoefnagel and wife, Sasinee, of Lop Buri, Thailand; a granddaughter, Holland Elizabeth Hoefnagel, of St. Augustine, Fla.; and a brother, Eric Hoefnagel, of Dallas, Texas.

Dick had numerous academic appointments from Boston University of Medicine, Harvard Medical School and Dartmouth Medical School.

After his retirement from Dartmouth Medical School he enjoyed caring for his golden retriever dogs and gardening. Dick authored the book Eleazor Wheelock and the Founding of Dartmouth College with the late Virginia Close which was one of his happiest and most fulfilling achievements.

No funeral services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers contributions in Dick’s name may be made to the Upper Valley Humane Society on Route 10, Enfield, N.H. or to Bayada Hospice, Norwich, Vt.

The family wishes to extend its deepest thanks to the staff with Bayada Hospice and Kindred Healthcare-Hanover Terrace for their support and care of Dick over the past year.
