Matilda “Tilly” Hensel

Windsor, Vt. — Matilda “Tilly” Hensel, 91, of Springfield and Windsor, passed away on July 3, 2013. Tilly was married to Dr. Samuel Hensel and they were the proud parents of three daughters, Margaret Ann Hensel, April Hensel and Nancy Lee Melmon. They also had three grandchildren Ashley Hensel-Browning, Corin Hensel-Browning and Samuel Hensel-Hunter as well as two great-grandchildren Aurora Hensel-Whalen and Saul Hensel-Whalen. Tilly also was delighted to have sons-in-law, Will Hunter and Ron Melmon and her granddaughter’s partner Sean Whalen in her life.

Tilly was one of 11 children and was a registered nurse. She worked in hospitals in New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Massachusetts before moving to Springfield, Vt. with husband Sam to live the good life on Crown Point Road. Tilly loved her children and grandchildren “unconditionally” with gifts of creativity, spontaneity, support and joy. Tilly also loved animals (Gretchen, Tigress, Tasha and Belle) and could be frequently seen at Riverside School with her dog walking friends. When Tilly was just 85 she was still exercising with friends at Curves and inspiring us all! Tilly, aka the “Flower Lady”, was a gardener par excellence and provided flowers and vegetables for the Family Center, the Senior Center and many folks without gardens. For the past few years Tilly lived and gardened at Stoughton House in Windsor where she loved and greatly appreciated the incredible staff and other folks living there.

Tilly’s family will celebrate her life in a private joyous garden party with grandchildren getting wet under the sprinkler. We hope Tilly and Sam look down and laugh!
