Ellen Marie Paterson (Griswold)
Lebanon, n.h. — Ellen Marie Paterson (Griswold), died Sunday, June 15, 2013, in her home after a prolonged illness.
She was born on Sept. 9, 1930, the fourth of eight children, at her parents Clifford and Beatrice (Tobin) Griswold’s home in Hanover, N.H. She attended a classic one room schoolhouse and later was a graduate of Windsor High School. As a young adult she was employed by Baker Library at Dartmouth College.
On June 14, 1952, she wed her only love, William Norman Paterson of Lebanon. Together they raised five children in their loving School Street home where she lived for 61 years. Her passing came one day after what would have been their 61st wedding anniversary. Bill left her side in 2008.
Her love of children found her actively involved in the Boy Scouts, Sunday school at the First Congregational Church, as a teacher’s aide at the School St. School and as “neighborhood mom.” Active in her early years she swam, danced, biked, skied and was a wonderful seamstress. Later, she reveled in going for a ride to just about any destination with her siblings and friends. She was the unofficial Plainfield Girls Club card shark where she played cards with “The Ladies.” She laughed freely and possessed a quintessential “wicked” New England sense of humor. She was an amazing cook and words can never adequately describe the wonderful smells that emanated from her kitchen. Her love of husband, family and friends was paramount to her. Ellen was a true icon whose beliefs were firmly rooted in honesty, hard work and determination.
Survivors are her daughter, Debra Johnson and husband, Brian of Blackstone, Mass., daughter, Kathy Dunham-Bellavance and fiancé, Stephen Perlowski, of Lebanon; son, Scott Paterson and his wife, Lisa of Summerville, S.C., son, Craig Paterson, his partner and Ellen’s loving caregiver, Claudia Trujillo, Glenn Paterson and his wife, Susan of Wilder, Vt.; 15 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; three brothers, Clifford (Mickey) Griswold, Jimmy Griswold, and Danny Griswold; two sisters, Betty Abbott and Anna Daniels; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brothers Donald and David Griswold.
The family would like to thank in particular Ellie Daniels who was a niece and a best friend as well as her sister Anna Daniels and sister-in-law Dolly Griswold for their selfless care and companionship.
There will be no calling hours; a graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2013, at 11 a.m. at The Glenwood Cemetery at Storrs Hill Lebanon.
The family requests in lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Lake Sunapee VNA & Hospice 107 Newport, Rd. New London, NH 03257.
