Matthew J. Hiney, Jr.

San Antonio, Texas — Matthew J. Hiney, Jr. died suddenly on Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, surrounded by several loved ones in San Antonio.

Matt was born in Attleboro, Mass., on June 15, 1939, the son of Matthew, Sr. and Hilda (Hutchinson) Hiney. He graduated from Attleboro High School in 1957 and served in the Marine Corps. While in the Marine Corps, Matt traveled to Africa and served as a ceremonial guard in Washington, DC often accompanying important dignitaries to Camp David.

He married Joan Beverly Proulx in 1963 and had three loving children. Matthew lived in Windsor, Vt. from 1965-1969 and was employed by Hartford Insurance Co. In 1969, he and his family moved to Orchard Park, N.Y., where Matt was employed by the Merchants Mutual Life Insurance Co, before moving to Contoocook, N.H., where he was employed by Travelers Insurance Co. Matt also spent several years living in Germany, exploring medical treatment for his ongoing illness.

Matthew married Martha Ballantyne in 1980 and they built their life together in Texas. They lived in Houston for several years before settling in San Antonio.

Matt was a survivor. He confronted obstacles with determination to beat the odds, finding solutions to problems that presented themselves.

Matt loved politics, spending time with his family and traveling. He enjoyed meeting others, and would strike up a conversation with those he met. He was a sentimental man who never forgot his humble beginnings, giving his children all of the opportunities they sought for themselves. He loved his grandchildren very much and was present for the birth of each one. Never one to give up, he fought to maintain his health and reach his personal goals. He will be remembered and missed by many.
