Audrey Littlefield Hunter
Marion, S.C. — Audrey Littlefield Hunter, 89, of Marion and widow of Jones Thomas Hunter, Jr., died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, after an extended illness. Formerly of Danvers, Mass., Mrs. Hunter was the daughter of Orville Mellen and Maude Pierce Littlefield. She graduated from Faulkner School of Nursing in 1946 and New York University with a nursing educator degree in 1951. She then moved south and joined the faculty of the McLeod Infirmary School of Nursing where her lifelong mission to improve health care delivery in SC began. From Director of Nursing at McLeod Infirmary, to home health care, to serving as the Chairman of the Pee Dee Regional Health Services District Board and member of the Hospice Advisory Board, she continually impacted health care decisions. She culminated her healthcare visionary mission by becoming the first woman to serve on the McLeod Health Board of Trustees and became the “voice of nursing” there for over 30 years. Mrs. Hunter loved genealogy and was an active member of the SC DAR and the Blue Savannah/Swamp Fox Chapter. She served as a former local Regent, District VI director and on the Tamassee DAR School Board and Advisory Board as well as the Scholarship Chairman. Mrs. Hunter was also a long time summer resident of Fairlee, Vt. where she enjoyed her days sitting on the front porch looking over her beloved Lake Morey, going out to lunch with her “Lunch Bunch” friends, and participating in many community activities. Having spent many summers in Vermont since she was a little girl visiting relatives, Vermont was her home-away-from-home which she looked forward to each summer.
