Doris Goodell Blodgett
Charlestown, N.H. — Doris Goodell Blodgett, 94, formerly of Charlestown passed away on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, and will be remembered for her ever present smile.
She had lived with her daughter Barbara Jellie and her husband Philip in Manchester, N.H. and for the past four years was a resident at the Hillsborough County Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Goffstown, N.H.
Doris was born June 6, 1920, the third child of Perry and Gladys Goodell of Pompanoosuc, Vt. and grew up on the family dairy farm and lumber mill. She was educated at Thetford Academy, Thetford, Vt. and earned her bachelor’s degree in education in 1941 from University of Vermont. She taught in the Charlestown schools, grades 6, 1, and 2 for many years, retiring in 1982. Doris greatly enjoyed teaching the children of Charlestown and saw several generations of families through primary school. She will also be remembered as a wonderful mentor to new teachers, many of whom became her close friends.
Doris married Harold Blodgett in 1944 and moved to Charlestown where they built their life together and raised two children, Mary-Ann Conly of Venice, Fla. and Barbara Jellie of Manchester, N.H.
Doris was active in the community, the Congregational Church in Charlestown and with her many friends and acquaintances. She enjoyed reading, traveling, people watching and good conversation.
She was predeceased by her parents; brother, Curtis Goodell; sister, Katherine Slack and husband Harold Blodgett. In addition to her two daughters, she leaves a brother, Perry Goodell of Littleton, N.H.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
There will be no calling hours.
A graveside service will be held at Pine Crest Cemetery in Charlestown where she will be buried next to Harold on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at 11 a.m. with Susan Grant-Rosen officiating.
Memorial donations in Doris’ name may be made to the Charlestown Congregational Church, PO Box 1498, Charlestown, NH 03603 or to the Activity Fund, Hillsborough County Nursing Home, 400 Mast Road, Goffstown, NH 03045.
The family wishes to thank the nurse aides and nurses of C3 at Hillsborough County Nursing Home for the excellent and loving care provided to Doris over the past four years and to Home Health and Hospice Care for additional TLC over the past few weeks.
