Luana Gail Heikes
Canaan, N.H. — Luana Gail Heikes, 66, died unexpectedly on Tuesday May 27, 2014. A native of Colorado, Luana moved to New Hampshire in 2011 to be near her grandchildren. She was born in Cortez, Colo. on June 5, 1947, to Robert and Irene (Jessup) Baer. She attended college at Western State University in Gunnison, Colo. As a young woman she moved to California to teach; there she met and married Jim Heikes. They moved to Michigan where they started a family. They later lived in Denver, Colo. and Ten Sleep, Wyo. In 1989, after a divorce, Luana moved with her daughter to Fort Collins, Colo., where she lived for the next 22 years. There she obtained a second degree in Wildlife Biology (1995) and a master’s in English (1997) at Colorado State University.
Luana had a lifelong love of reading and writing and was a member of several writers’ and book groups over the years. Her favorite pastimes included spending lots of time with animals, gardening and exploring nature. Being a freelance editor and indexer of scientific journals was the work she enjoyed and of which she was most proud. Luana was most passionate about being a mother, grandmother and friend. She was known for her generosity of heart and her amazing memory for detail of place and time; every birthday and anniversary was remembered by a card and usually a phone call.
She is survived by her daughter, Laura Tafe, Laura’s husband Mike and two children, of West Lebanon, N.H.; her three stepchildren, whom she loved as her own: Robin Heikes, his wife, Heidi and their four children, of Loraine, Ore.; Kim Dahl, her husband Michael and their two children, of Reno, Nev.; Kris Holt, her husband John and their two children, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; her brother, Rick Baer, of Grand Junction, Colo.; and her sister, Jeanette Little, of Farmington, N.M.
If desired, donations may be made in her honor to the Upper Valley Humane Society in Enfield, NH (http://www.uvhs.org/).
