Joyce Ann Barton
Grantham, N.H. — Joyce Ann (Sherman) Barton, 81, died Tuesday, April 29, 2014, at home surrounded by her children after a brief battle with cancer.
Born April 3, 1933, the daughter of Henry and Cora (Reney) Sherman, she grew up in Grantham with her sisters, Edna Truell, Jeanette Willis and Marie Newcomb. She married Kenneth Ora Barton in 1949 and raised four children. A country woman of enormous strength and decency, she lived her years of hard and difficult work honoring the life she was given, respecting the efforts of others and being faithful to the principle of loyalty and love for her family. She was a kind, loving, and trustworthy mother and farmer.
Joyce loved horses and attended many country fairs to watch horse and pony pulling competitions, as well as nurturing many of her own horses on the family farm. She also enjoyed watching antique tractor pulling, and was quite the accomplished tractor operator herself. For many years, she and husband Kenneth owned and operated the Grantham School Bus, carefully shuttling Grantham students to and from school. When her children were young, she held informal dance lessons in her small kitchen for all the neighborhood kids.
She was part of many a road trip to area casinos where she enjoyed gambling with family and friends. For many years, she prepared homemade donuts to feed hungry family and friends who came together to gather sap to boil into maple syrup. She loved to attend local fire department raffles and was consistently lucky, always sharing her winnings with family. She was a tireless supporter of each and every one of her many family members, always providing love and encouragement with a warm smile and a big hug. At Christmas time, she lovingly made and delivered Million Dollar Pies to just about everyone she knew.
She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Kenneth Ora Barton in 2004, and son Stephen Carl Barton in 2010. She is survived by a daughter, Cora Louise Campbell of Croydon; sons, Kenneth Henry Barton and Jack Ora Barton, both of Grantham; sisters, Marie Newcomb and Jeanette Willis of Croydon; many grandchildren & great-grandchildren; a great-great granddaughter; nieces, nephews and cousins.
There are no calling hours. A graveside Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 24, 2014, at 1 p.m. at Grantham Memorial Cemetery.
