Laura Katherine Hathorn

Woodstock, Vt. — Laura K. Hathorn died on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, after a period of declining health. She was born on Oct. 19, 1930, in Randolph, Vt., the daughter of Henry C. and Pearl Hathorn.

She spent her childhood on the family farm in Bridgewater. She was a graduate of Castleton State College, where she studied Education, later becoming a talented and influential second grade teacher at the Woodstock Elementary School in Woodstock, Vt. for 40 years.

She started the “Kindness Club” that instilled in children respect for each other, animals, and the environment. In the 1980’s she initiated the foundation of “Opening Worlds”, a non profit organization for enhancing the life experiences of children in the community.

Laura was a truly compassionate and empathetic woman. She retired from her teaching career in 1994 and enjoyed time in her garden, her sheep, cats and dogs, most recently Dartagnan, her loving Sheltie. Laura enjoyed feeding the birds outside her home and was an active supporter and beloved friend of VVSA Humane Society.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Lonnie and Francis. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, James and Mary Jane Fox of Chazie, N.Y. as well as nieces and nephews.

There will be no services, and burial will be private at her request.
