Francis Clayton Adams
Hanover, N.H. — Francis Clayton Adams, 98, died at his apartment at Wheelock Terrace in Hanover on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014.
Clayton was born on Nov. 4, 1915, in Milford, Mass., the son of Norman Kirk and Catherine Rita (Kelley) Adams. He attended Becker College, after which he began his career at the Kendall Company in Walpole, Mass. He later joined IBM as a sales representative in Boston. He held management positions at IBM at several locations on the East Coast, including IBM headquarters in Armonk, N.Y. where he served as consultant to the Chairman of the Board. Clayton retired in 1972 and he and Mary Ellen moved to their summer home in Woodstock, Vt. Clayton was engaged in commercial real estate brokerage in Vermont and New Hampshire, retiring in 1988.
While in Woodstock, Clayton served as a Village Trustee, Library Trustee, Woodstock Planning Commission Member, and served on the board of the Vermont Land Trust.
Clayton was married to Mary Ellen Lane of Uxbridge, Mass. on Nov. 4, 1941, a marriage that lasted until her death on Feb. 6, 2006. He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia Jane Neily (Elwin) of Canaan, N.H.; and two sons, Clayton Kirk Adams of Stony Point, N.Y. and Anthony Lane Adams (Carey) of Andover, Mass.; as well as four grandchildren: Amy Adams, Ian Adams, Jessica Neily and Erica Devoy; and three great-grandchildren: Cameron White, Carson White, and Casey Devoy.
A graveside service will be held in the River Street Cemetery in Woodstock in the spring.
