Obituary policy

Valley News obituaries are printed as written by families, with editing only to correct obvious spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors, as well as, in some cases, for consistency of style. This allows family members to memorialize a loved one as they wish. The paper charges a $75 fee for obituaries of up to 300 words, including a photograph and, in the case of veterans, a flag. For longer submissions, there is a $10 fee for every 35 additional words. There is also a $10 service charge for faxed obituaries. There is no charge for brief announcements of a death, of spring burial or memorial services, or for obituaries that simply state the fact of someone’s passing, their age, town, cause and location of death, as well as providing funeral and service information.
