Letter: Are Alumni Holding Dartmouth Hostage?

To the Editor:

Since an array of well-intentioned presidents and other concerned administrators has so far failed to alter the Animal House behavior of Dartmouth’s fraternity system, perhaps one should look for the “hidden hand” of resistance elsewhere. Could it be that a number of powerful (male) alumni are holding the college hostage to their attachment to a Greek system many other colleges have altered or dissolved entirely — by threatening to withhold money that Dartmouth has become hooked on if any changes are made? If this is so, it should be fairly easy to discover who they are and to publish their names and position statements (that is, threats?). This might, in fact, prove rather interesting.
