Jacks Edge Raptors

Windsor — The Windsor High girls basketball team broke a late tie by scoring the last three points against Rivendell on Wednesday, escaping by a 34-31 score in the opening round of the Vermont Division III playoffs.

The host Yellowjackets had averaged 62 points during their last two games, which caught the eye of Raptors coach Hank Tenney.

“Our game plan was to slow the ball down and get some drives to the basket,” he said. “We couldn’t compete with Windsor on the boards. They were just too big.”

But Tenney’s game plan almost worked against a foe that was not only 11-9 to Rivendell’s 9-10, but had compiled that record during a 20-game schedule that included 14 foes from the Division I or Division II ranks. The Raptors used a patient, motion offense to possess the ball for long periods, scoring when opportunities arose.

“We didn’t play the dribble drive very well,” said Windsor coach Bruce Mackay, who is 9-0 during home playoff games during his eight seasons with the Yellowjackets.

A Windsor possession with six minutes remaining gave Winsor a 31-26 lead before the Raptors’ Hanna Rockwell sank a 3-point shot and a 2-point basket, the latter coming with three minutes to play.

Windsor’s Asleay Wilcox scored from 10 feet with 90 seconds remaining for a 33-31 lead. Tenney called time out with 30 seconds to go, drawing a play where the ball went to Rockwell. Instead, it wound up with Megan Winagle, whose shot came up short from the top of the key with 10 seconds on the clock.

Windsor’s Elizabeth McCabe rebounded the ball and was fouled, but missed both shots. She did, however, drain another shot from the charity stripe, accounting for the final score.

Windsor (12-9) made 10-of-20 free throws and Rivendell was 4-of-6 from the line. Rockwell finished with 10 points and Winagle nine for Rivendell (9-11). Wilcox had 11 points and McCabe 10 for Windsor.

Seventh-seeded Windsor advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinals, where it will face the winner of today’s opening-round game between 15th-seeded Bellows Falls and second-seeded Williamstown.
