Unity: Father, Daughter Win Seats
Unity — Town Meeting voters cast ballots yesterday for town and school officers and voted to oust incumbent School Board member Craig Shute, electing longtime Unity resident Robert McDevitt, 142-80.
Residents also elected his daughter, Caryl McDevitt, to a three-year term on the Planning Board, as she defeated Ethel Jarvis, 156-69.
Jarvis, a Sullivan County commissioner, also lost a three-year seat as library trustee to Mary Ellen Bellimer, 162-60.
Unity’s Town Meeting continues Saturday at noon at Town Hall where, among other agenda items, residents will vote on the town’s proposed $969,863 operating budget, which is up 3.4 percent, or $32,500, from last year.
The annual school district meeting will be held on March 23, at noon, at Stevens High School to vote on several items, including the projected $3.5 million school budget, a $350,000 bond issue to complete the new elementary school, and just under $30,000 for the purchase of new technology equipment.
