Unity School Board Chairman Ousted

Unity — The incumbent chairman of the School Board, which has been the target of intense criticism over a school construction project that is considerably over budget, was turned out of office in a three-way race.

Craig Shute, a former School Board member, defeated Chairman Shawn Randall, as well as John Callum. Shute received 162 votes, Callum 59 and Randall 46.

Callum, however, easily won the Selectboard seat vacated by Willard Hathaway, who did not run this year. That race saw Callum, a previous member of the Selectboard, receive 211 votes, compared with Debra Leahy’s 41 and Randall’s 22.

The turnout of 287 voters was about 29 percent of the town’s registered voters.

None of the other town office elections were contested. The race for treasurer was evenly split among three write-in candidates. Callum, Rosemary Heino and Mary Hall each received four votes; it was unclear Tuesday night who would take the position.

The town will hold its floor meeting at noon on Saturday at Town Hall, where it will discuss a slightly more than $1 million budget. The school meeting, which will tackle issues including a $2.75 million bond to finish the town’s embattled K-8 elementary school, will be held on March 22.
