Sunapee Voters Approve Town, School Budgets

Sunapee — First-term incumbent Selectboard member Sue Gottling defeated challenger John Augustine, 370-270, for a three-year seat on the board, and the town and school budgets passed during all-day Town Meeting balloting.

Also approved, 498-114, was an article to designate the properties known as Wendell Marsh as town owned.

While all the articles on the school warrant were approved, including $98,000 to replace part of the roof at the middle high school, several articles for large capital expenditures on the town warrant failed.

Voters rejected a 10-year lease-purchase for a highway department grader, a seven-year lease-purchase for a dump truck, and $40,000 for another dump truck.

Also defeated was Article 30, which sought $95,000 to pave the gravel portion of Stagecoach Road. The money would have come from an existing reserve fund.

The town budget of $6.5 million was approved and two articles to put money in the fire apparatus reserve fund and withdraw money from the fund to buy and equip a tanker truck also passed.

All 14 zoning amendment articles passed, as did $125,000 for the paving program, $25,000 for the building maintenance reserve fund, $25,000 for the conservation commission fund and $65,000 for a truck for the water and sewer department.

The town now has authority to withdraw money from the dirt road capital reserve fund without voter approval at Town Meeting with the passage of Article 33.

The community revitalization tax relief incentive, which allows the town to exempt taxes on the increased value of redeveloped properties in the village-commercial zone, passed.

The school budget of $11.1 million passed along with two articles to put $25,000 each in special education reserve fund and elementary school maintenance capital reserve fund.

Incumbents Shaun Carroll and Kimberly Denney were uncontested in their re-election to the School Board.

Money for the cemeteries expendable trust fund and milfoil control reserve fund were also approved.

Voter turnout was 27 percent, or 640 of the town’s 2,421 registered voters.
