Letter: Call in a Mediator
To the Editor:
When two parties find it impossible to agree, bringing in a mediator is one way to solve the problem. With the current government shut down and potential catastrophic default on our debts, it might be wise to look at this alternative. The mediated solution in this case could be to adopt the budget and spending recommendations of the bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform, also know by the names of its co-chairmen as Boles-Simpson. These recommendations provide the blueprint for both reducing the deficit and achieving long-term financial stability. Like most compromises, it will please neither side, but would provide a reasonable and positive way forward. It could serve not only as a face-saving way out of the current mess, but also would be good for our nation.
