Arnold R. Richardson, Jr.

Springfield, Vt. — Arnold R. Richardson, Jr., 54, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2013, after struggling with multiple illnesses for many years.

He was born in Vero Beach, Fla., Sept. 27, 1959, the son of Arnold (Skip) Richardson, Sr. and Delphia (Ovitt) Richardson. He was a 1979 graduate of Springfield High School in Springfield, Vt. and received his Machine Tender Certificate from N.H. Vocational Technical College in 1981.

Arnold worked for over 20 years at Springfield Hospital, first in the dietary department and then floor care maintenance. He was forced to stop working due to years of dialysis while he waited for a kidney transplant. He received that transplant in August, 2000.

In spite of a significant language learning disability, Arnold was gifted in his abilities to fix and restore all types of machines, from riding lawn mowers to industrial tractors. His latest project was the restoration of an International Harvester tractor. His talents also extended to auto repair, electrical, plumbing and many other household needs.

Arnold was a private person who enjoyed nature and country environments, especially growing up with his five “chatty” sisters. He preferred to work alone and found solitude comforting.

Arnold loved to keep busy with many projects and hobbies. He especially enjoyed fishing with his Uncle Paul Gregory and long-time friend Jon Hedrick. He had many tales of snowmobiling trips with his best friend, Barry Andrews, and neighbors, Steve and Sam Kraft of Springfield. He built beautiful car and truck models and worked on many wood projects. He loved NASCAR racing. Above all, his greatest interest was in tractor trailers, i.e. “eighteen wheelers.” He worked hard to obtain his CDL to drive but became too ill to continue pursuing this career.

Arnold is survived by his mother of 37 years, Kathy Callahan of Springfield, Vt.; his sisters, Diane Lynch (and husband, Jerome), Donna Benoit (and husband, Charles), and Delphia (Dede) Machia (and husband, Paul (Jeff); five aunts and six uncles; many cousins, nieces and nephews (One nephew was just born on his birthday this year). Arnold is also survived by his devoted dog and best buddy, Sully.

Arnold was predeceased by his father, Arnold Richardson, Sr. in 1999, his birth mother, Delphia Ovitt in 2003, his sisters Sue Audet in 2005 and Joyce Benard in 2007.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan 11, 2014. Reverend Gerry Piper will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Springfield in the Spring.

Friends may call at the Chapel from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, Kathy asks that donations be made in Arnold’s memory to the Springfield Humane Society, http://spfldhumane.org/index.htm , 401 Skitchewaug Trail, Springfield, VT 05156, (802) 885-3997.
