Sharon Officials: Route 132 Work Won’t Affect School Bus Pickups

Sharon — Officials said school bus pickups for students at Sharon Elementary School and The Sharon Academy should not be affected by the partial closing of Route 132 this week.

Selectboard members expect the road to be closed for about a week from where it intersects with Interstate 89 to Beaver Meadow Road.

The board made the decision Friday to close the road on the advice of a structural engineer, who said ongoing repair work to Tropical Storm Irene damage has made part of the road steeper than it should be, Chairman Paul Haskell said.

On Saturday, Haskell said the Selectboard had communicated with representatives from both schools. They had already been in talks about alternate bus routes in anticipation of a planned closing of part of the road later in the school year, he said.

“Something that will be a great discouragement to elementary school students is, we almost always figure out how to get there (for school bus pickups),” he said.

School Board Chairman Steve Gagliardone, who lives on Beaver Meadow Road near the closing, also said he did not expect the school buses to be affected.

“It only means that you have to take a detour that’s about an eighth of a mile to the left,” he said.

“Everyone’s going to school on Monday.”
