Carol L. Rittenhouse
Randolph Center, Vt. — Carol L. Rittenhouse, beloved mother, sister, and friend, of Randolph Center, passed away at the age of 52 on Friday, May 3, 2013.
Carol was born on May 16, 1960, in Clinton, N.J. to Oscar W. and Barbara (Galvin) Rittenhouse. She graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. with a degree in Environmental Science and received her nursing training at Fairview Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, Minn. Carol began her career as a registered nurse at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia, Minn. She and her family moved to the Upper Valley in 1990. She was a highly competent and compassionate nurse in the intensive care and emergency departments at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and in the Gifford Medical Center emergency department. Despite her rigorous work schedule, Carol was a tireless community volunteer, giving of her time to the Indian River Nursery School, Good Neighbor Health Clinic, WISE, Randolph Food Shelf, and many other efforts to help those in need. Carol travelled to Haiti with a DHMC team following the January 2010 earthquake; the experience changed her life. She returned to Haiti twice more, working in rural communities with Community Health Initiative to bring basic care to remote areas. At the time of her death, she was preparing to return again.
Carol always made time to help her friends and family, putting their needs before her own. Her children were her greatest joy. She spent countless hours traveling the country to watch their sporting events. She loved being outdoors and enjoyed gardening, hiking, skiing and running with her dogs. Carol was a loyal, thoughtful and generous friend. She treated everyone she met with kindness, respect and interest.
Carol was pre-deceased by her parents. She is survived by her children, Ariel M. Grald and Dylan A. Grald, both of Randolph Center; her sisters, Gretchen Rittenhouse (Christopher Lowrey) of South Strafford, Vt. and Janet Daniel (Aubrey Daniel) of Phoenix, Ariz.; her aunts, Martha Inskip of Kenmore, N.Y. and Ann Develin of Blue Bell, Pa.; her uncle, Richard Rittenhouse of Venice, Fla.; her step-sisters and step-brother, Elizabeth Markevitch, Alice Johnson-Kelly, and Richard Johnson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of Carol’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at Barrett Memorial Hall in South Strafford, Vt. Refreshments will follow. In lieu of flowers, Carol’s family suggests that donations be made in her memory to help Community Health Initiative’s Haitian health care efforts (www.chihaiti.org).
