Marguerite Naamah Hutchison Cox

Independence, Va. — Marguerite Naamah Hutchison Cox, of Independence, Va., died Sunday, August 4, 2013.

Marguerite was born February 9, 1929, in Toledo, Ohio, to Eva Bush Hutchison and Robert Lowe Hutchison. She grew up in Dearborn, Mich., and later received her Bachelor of Arts from University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

While at the University, Marguerite met James Melville Cox, and they married on September 4, 1948. After she graduated from college, they moved to southwestern Virginia, where Jim taught at Emory and Henry College in Emory, Va., and Marguerite taught in a one-room schoolhouse in the mountains of Washington County until their first child was born.

Over the years, they added five more children to their family and changed residences several times, living first in Bloomington, Ind., and settling in 1963 in Norwich, Vt.

After her children were grown, Marguerite returned to teaching, completing the Upper Valley Teacher Training Program and working as a classroom assistant at the Marion Cross Elementary School in Norwich.

In 1985, when Jim retired, the couple moved to the Cox family farm, Brookside, in Independence. Marguerite soon became involved with the Grayson County Public Library, where she served as the coordinator of the regional Adult Literacy Program, also participating as a tutor, which meant a great deal to her.

Marguerite had a quick, dry sense of humor that endeared her to both her children and grandchildren. She was an avid Democrat, with a deep sense of compassion and justice. She was a person of eclectic interests, among them gardening, geography, art, and language. Her great love for and curiosity about nature were contagious. She spent hours tending her gardens, and her bird feeders were always well supplied. The loss of Marguerite will be deeply felt by her family, her friends, and the thousands of birds that visited her feeders.

Marguerite was predeceased by her husband of 64 years; her sister, Mary Ann McCane, of Wilmington, Del.; and her beloved granddaughter, Lucy Jennings. She is survived by her brother, Robert Hutchison, of Auburn, Calif.; and her children, Karen Sheets and husband Mark, of Thompson Falls, Mont., Marian Cawley and husband Rick, of Corinth, Vt., Julia Cox and husband David Woodford, of Roanoke, Va., Ellen Cox and husband Tom Valtin, of San Francisco, Calif., David Cox and wife Sylvie, of Dallas, Texas, and Virginia Cox and husband Bill Filler, of Belmont, Mass.; as well as 14 grandchildren and four nephews.

Donations in Marguerite’s name can be made to the Grayson County Public Library in Independence, or to the local library of your choice.
