Letter: Capturing the Spirit of a Life
To the Editor:
On Monday mornings, I consistently pick up the Valley News and flip it over to read the “A Life” feature. And just as consistently, I find a thoughtful and inspiring reflection on the life of someone from our community. It is a bonus that these pieces are done by staff writers who typically cover different topics for the paper.
Last week, the Valley News published back-to-back articles about the drowning death of Ernest Amoh. Unlike the “A Life” columns, these news stories were written under the pressure of immediate deadlines and limited information. The articles managed to portray the humanity of the young man who died and those who endeavored to save his life. The writing also conveyed the tragic loss in the context of otherwise celebratory activities related to Dartmouth commencement.
It is never easy to capture the spirit of a life in the pages of a newspaper, and it is even more difficult to cover the news of a death with compassion and grace. Thank you for your efforts on both fronts.
